15.4.11 Project Completed
It is finished! All the details have been discussed with Robert. The cutting files have been sent to Alumar Netherland that will generate the nesting files and a pro-forma invoice.
From now on we will be operative.
I started thinking about lead for the keel. Even more difficult than aluminium. We shall see

Where and How to Build
Where and How to Build
The building of a boat has several phases
I hope I am not forgetting anything important. So step number one will be welding the metal parts.
So to keep the fun of doing it and balancing with the cost, we decided to do the work at a place near a friend who has a metal work shop.. In this way it will still be auto construction but with the assistance of a professional welder.
We will consider the other steps later, even if they are intermingling somehow, and the exact timing for ordering different parts is not yet entirely clear. The web site of Brian is an unprecedented source of information.

We shall see but now we know where and how.

Getting The Aluminium
Getting The Aluminium
Buying metals for a non professional builder is not easy. The supplier seem to try take advantage of you and you little experience. Craftman shops want only to do entire work and ask for prices very high.
After many close to home offers we decided to go for Alumar. Not to be confused with AlumarYachts. Alumar is an aluminium shop in the Netherlands with a complete product list and the best prices I could find.
More they will also take care of the cutting and lofting floor.
Ok now we have ordered 4.5 tons of aluminium!
More work is needed with Robert to complete the project and send to them the final cutting files.

The Name
OndaNera
Blue Pearl is a Dix 43PH that inspired us a lot.
It's rugged appearance, the voyages, including Antarctica make this boat a good example of the solidity of the project. But the appearance is certainly somehow military.
So when we imagine or boat finished we think of something similar. The name must be in accordance.
One of the oldest a famous songs of aour Marina Militare is the song of the submarine corp. The lyrics are particularly emotional in regard of night sailing when the water and the wave really look black.
"Sfiorano l'onde nere nella fitta oscurita'..."
"Lightly touch the black waves in the deep obscurity" more or less
So here is the name OndaNera!

Inno dei Sommergibilisti
Sfiòrano l'onde nere nella fitta oscurità,
dalle torrette fiere ogni sguardo attento stà!
Taciti ed invisibili, partono i sommergibili!
Cuori e motori d'assaltatori
contro l'immensità!
dalle torrette fiere ogni sguardo attento stà!
Taciti ed invisibili, partono i sommergibili!
Cuori e motori d'assaltatori

Personalization of the project
19.2.11 Personalization of the project
We ha been going trough an extensive e-mail exchange with Robert. A lot of learning of english sailing terminology: not easy!
The two main arguments are
The copkit in the original Dix drawing is 110-120 cm wide. Now this is too much for serious sailing unless you add some central feet support. And it is not wide enough to think of placing a central table as separation.
Davide being a Med person was in favour of a wide copkit. Robert pushed for 70cm. We had arguments on where one would spend most of the time, wirth of the seat, influence on the aft cabin ceiling and so, so so.
Final decison 80cm!
The rudder. I have always a fun of skeg rudders, they give you confidence. But owners of other Dix 43 with an original skeg changed the rudder and retrofitted a spade rudder. The 110mm shaft on the Dix is certainly strong, but we know that the rudder is always the weakest part, coral reef (a dream), floating objects. This argument could go on for ever. Robert to make me happy also proposed a partial skeg rudder with a sacrificial part. But then came an accident report of a boat that sunk because of the skeg that penetrated in the hull at impact.
Final decision: better without rudder that with a blocked rudder or a damaged hull.
I know Davide will criticize this decision, but at the end the point is that you must be "confident" on your boat and sleep well with what you have underwater!

BOAT PLANS and ALUMARYACHTS
30.1.11 Boat Plans and AlumarYachts
Now after some reassurance from Davide we must proceed.
Two things are needed:
A shop where to build the hull and do the welding
Converting the boat plans in aluminium structures
Here comes AlumarYachts. What is AlumarYachts? It is Robert Christinger. I found out him through Dix site to Odyssey site (Brian Russel building at home a Dix43PH) to AlumarYachts, com.
Brian Russel is an exceptional boat builder. He started his Dix43 PH a couple of years ago. Does it really take that much? He had his NESTED CUTTING FILES made by Robert.
Now what is a cutting file?
Aluminium is bought in plates of 6x2 meters. Out of this you must cut all the small pieces, not so small, that will make up the boat. They must be drawn of a computer software to optimize the use of the plate. Not very much different from the little airplane models that many of us as built as a child. The principle is exactly the same!
Robert ha completely digitalize Dix plans, made a Dx43 PH for himself, and he his offering his assistance to complete this part of the project.

THE DRAWINGS
23.01.11 Here they are
The boat plans and drawing arrived today from Dix.
As a matter of fact I was a little disappointed. I expected something bigger, larger, greater, MORE.
But we are now a step further in realization of the project. This is the first practical step that needed to be done. The choice has been made. No rethinking this is the boat that we are going to build, or at least we will try.
Looking at the contents is discouraging. For a non expert they mean really little.
More it looked missing any detailed information on the steps necessary for the real construction. Probably it could mean something to an architect or an engineer, but not to me.
We have a long way to go.
First let's send the drawing to Davide! Than we listen to his comments.
